going seventeen | we have to cross over in a day? are you being serious right now?
premise:
seventeen are split into two teams who have to build a boat out of plastic bottles and get across the length of a wave pool within a time limit.
comments:
not every content has to be as high concept as what happened on the set. sometimes you just need to drop seventeen off at a waterpark after closing and give them a task.
i remember taking a break from keeping up with going seventeen for a while because of school (after about three years of consistently watching every single episode as soon as they came out). when i finally did return to watching going seventeen again, this was the most recent episode at that time (around the same time i saw seventeen for the second time on their seventeen is right here tour), and i remember just thinking how absurd this concept was for going seventeen. i still think it's definitely outside the box -- and this is the same series where they had to farm rice and bungee jump!
even with a premise that's simultaneously absurd and quite simple, i actually enjoyed this episode a lot! i feared it might run thin and become repetitive/dull like kickball, but i was pleased to see it actually fared quite well throughout the entire runtime. while this episode is especially painful to watch as an engineering student (with jeonghan playfully pointing out that dokyeom shouldn't have to run an experiment to understand the concept of buoyancy ?!?!) i actually liked the way members were able to equally garner screentime together despite how skewed the episode concept may seem. hoshi's known for being fun and having a very loud, assertive personality, but acknowledges that he has trouble in episodes requiring more strategic brainpower. meanwhile, members like mingyu and wonwoo who particularly excel in strategic thinking do get a little more room to shine in this episode. HOWEVER, what's fun about this episode in particular is that even members who didn't shine in the first episode get a part in the second: one of hoshi's moments is actually my favorite in the episode. and also i just really love the ending of this episode. i think it's hilarious.
p.s. i know the members acknowledge this in the episode anyway but i really do think it's refreshing when they have gose episodes filmed at night. ones like hide and seek, the tag, and carnival just have such a coziness to them that i feel like i haven't had in gose since. idk. it's the same feeling of staying late at a sleepover to me.
ranking:
concept: 8; again, deceptively simple and yet also kinda strange for a kpop group's variety webshow.
chemistry: 9; vernon actually says this i think, but it's really cute how this episode brought out so much teamwork between the members
enjoyment: 9; shoot man i don't remember liking this episode this much!
overall - 8.6/10
