going seventeen | the gejang
premise:
parodying 'the menu,' the members of seventeen must determine the gejang of seungkwan's mother and dino's grandmother to 'save' them
comments:
really interesting premise! i hold a minor in film so any time they reference a movie in gose i always feel a little giddy. the premise itself is actually really sweet and asks seventeen to remember the good old trainee days...
except... i don't think it fully works that way? the concept is quite rigid and very one-note, to the point where i don't really think it was worth stretching into two episodes. yes, the plating was very pretty, and seeing them roll out 99 plates of gejang was very cool, and the overall message and fact that they were able to OOPS SPOILERS deduce the gejang was both heartwarming and impressive, but like... that's it. that's the concept. and there's not really any stakes, aside from making seungkwan's mom or dino's grandmother sad ㅠㅠ there's not a prize that would make their competitiveness kick in either. it's just a bit of a flat episode, but the reveal that minghao's pick was the real gejang the whole time? insanity. truly hidden ace of this season especially after where's seventeen.
ranking:
concept: 3; goes more for premise and nostalgia factor aside from generating new interactions between members
chemistry: 4; cute moments between the members, especially in the reveal of pre/early debut days, but it really does end there.
enjoyment: 5; one of the weakest episodes, but again, quite sweet.
overall - 4/10
