going seventeen | making the going seventeen theme song

overall ranking

premise:

seventeen make a theme song together for going seventeen

comments:

SO CUTE! this is just a really adorable episode in terms of going seventeen. strictly speaking this isn't the same show that i've been talking about on this blog! in his retrospective, s.coups straight up talked about how going seventeen got a full variety show rebrand in 2020 (though i do think it was influenced by a lot of the episodes they did in 2019) and it really reformulated the show and made it a lot more cohesive than before (thinking about how gose 2019 ep 1, svt trip, ttt, and dangdanggamche were all called going seventeen when gose 2019 ep 1 would probably be inside seventeen and svt trip would probably be in svt rec nowadays). but i think this vlog series is certainly still worth talking about especially in the context of this episode. it really feels like a little piece of svt history :') watching them go from the instrumentals woozi has in universe factory, singing along the script with a demo using bss+jeonghan's vocals, the meeting with all of them where they show the song to the rest of the group ("them going '6 out of 5 stars!!'") is SO CUTE o(≧▽≦)o ) was SO ADORBS!!

and then they went and made it!! i always love watching this part of all of them recording the song. i honestly wish they let vernon sing in his high register because he's so energetic and jolly :') i think about jeonghan slapping wonwoo's butt to the beat all the time. it's just so heartwarming to me hearing the "ayyyy" and vernon's forced "hahaha! haha!" (which reminds me so much of some of his early childhood videos where he'd have to fake a laugh) still being in the gose intro to this day... it's just so cute!!!!!!

and i loved watching them film the video as well. i know svt have gone on record to say the 2019 theme song was a tad too long but it's just so endlessly endearing to me. the multiple takes of everyone dancing, the excitement of doing their dance in bed and on a "bus" (i LOVE the makeshift bus), them doing the dance down the stairs, the ramen scene... it's all just so adorable! and i love how pledis went and even rented a whole set for them to make this video. it's still my favorite video to this day no matter how many references and no matter how creative the art style is for any future going seventeen intro (or outro style). i love it!

ranking:

(like all non-variety show style episodes, this one is not ranked. however, here is my intro ranking:

  1. 2019 - the original title sequence! it's so endearing knowing seventeen themselves planned every part of this one aside from maybe the location hehe
  2. 2025 - now THIS ONE is cool. i'm going to say "i like pictures of the actual members over art style" but this is the exception. IT IS THE EXCEPTION. this one is just SO COOL in how it changes art styles, cycles through calling back episodes (throughout the years btw!!), and gives each member a part to shine in their representative episode. idk, i really like this one!
  3. 2021 - pixel art! i assume they used the carat awards to gauge which episodes to include here! i love how they edit the carnival car depending on the episode as well, but there isn't actual photos of the members here :(
  4. 2020 - paper cutouts! i actually had my 17th birthday cake based on this title sequence. it's endearing mostly for that reason. the photos of the members faces on little chibi bodies is adorable though!
  5. 2024 - claymation! i actually really like this one!! pictures of the actual members is always going to be superior to art style for me but i really like the way this one is simple in the one avatar running, but represents all the members through the different episodes by the change of outfit. i also like the ending screen layout of this one!
  6. 2023 - clouds! really just the 2022 sequence but better since the planets from 2022 are all in the final screen. i feel like this one, while having specific episode themes and photos of the members from each of the episodes, isn't as strong in its theming or its call back to going seventeen episodes and kinda blends into my memory. i do like the cassette customization though!
  7. 2026 - big house! i like the usage of the big house to show a different gose scene in each room (with interactions of members from different episodes in each one! i love seeing tasty wonwoo from insomnia zero in the same room as sleeping vernon from ttt, it's genius! but love shot going rangers joshua is a close second). this is nitpicky though - i DON'T LIKE how the intro lingers for an extra second. WHY.
  8. 2022 - planets! i actually didn't realize until now that every planet represented a different episode oops. feels less connected to the inside jokes as the other seasons though, but i liked the return to actual photos while 2021 lacked that!

OUTRO STYLE RANKING SPEEDROUND

  1. 2026 - I LOVE THE 13 MEMBER CALL BACK TO PREVIOUS EPISODES ... MY FAVORITE OFC BEING "I WANT TO SEE YOU DO THIS" GOD OF MUSIC
  2. 2021 - I'M BIASED IDGAF I LIKE SEEING THE LITTLE DANCING SEUNGKWAN
  3. 2024 - THE AVATARS ARE JUST SO CUTE PEEKING UP AT ME I LOVE MY OT13
  4. 2022 - the cloud border is just kawaii idk.
  5. 2023 - it's just the planets. but it's not totally boring in comparison to...
  6. 2025 - it's just fuzzy letters. so like.
  7. 2020 - paper cut out. matches the style of the intro, but doesn't stand out like at all.
  8. 2019 - simplest of the pack with a white border. we can do better! (also iirc the only one to not preview the next episode, instead playing back moments from the current episode!)
