going seventeen | how to eat rice the perfect way
premise:
using the rice obtained in planting rice and placing bets, the members of seventeen propose their ideas on the perfect way to enjoy rice. the winner gets to pick the snacks provided at going seventeen filming for the whole year.
comments:
pretty simple enough concept! and what's fun is the way you see how each member tackles the challenge and what that reveals about each member. though there have been a lot of gose episodes recently that aim to showcase specific member personalities (i'm fresh off 13 angry men and liar liar), i feel like an open ended episode like this does that most straightforwardly through such a simple premise. "how would you eat the rice?" (and how do you hope to capture the hearts of the staff?)
spoilers wonwoo and vernon, the quieter members, went very simple with their meal. filial seungkwan, soonyoung, and chan all got their meals from their families. class clowns jeonghan and seokmin (a duo i always love to see in gose... let's run back the escape room episode) did a skit. "craziest" member of seventeen, joshua, did an ice bath to enjoy his ramen. "leader" s.coups cheated and stole seungkwan's meal. dependable and hardworking mingyu cooked an entire meal himself. and the winner, woozi, freeloaded off of everyone else. and jeonghan (the actual resident cheater) takes woozi's prize.
i liked that the staff and seventeen voted in this episode, so it was an actual nailbiter and a surprise seeing who won - even if it's completely out of left field seeing as none of the members voted for him (as the fellow competitors, which makes sense). the build up is not super engaging and feels a bit disjointed simply because of the amount of freedom the members had in tackling their prompt (the highlight of all highlights prior to the showcase being jeonghan and dokyeom's rehearsal). however, despite the pretty slow setup with every member figuring out what to do, the showcase is pretty fun all around.
ranking:
concept: 7; simple, but very effective!
chemistry: 6; unfortunately the prompt does prevent a lot of member interaction at the cost of showcasing individual member personalities
enjoyment: 7; actually better than i remembered!
overall - 6.6/10
