going seventeen | how the pack rests
premise:
a parody of nature documentaries, the wild seventeen are observed as they rest in a valley.
comments:
honestly the premise kinda put me off for a bit on this episode since it just felt so... nothing burger. they have the cameras set up and there's not really any programming, which i know is the point, to see seventeen in their natural habitat, but concept aside it's nothing we haven't seen before. even the nature setting feels like it's going against the grain of the natural habitat. it's funny to see the cameramen dressed in camo to be 'unnoticeable' and the karaoke machine set up to lure the members to the area, but placing them in such a foreign area to mimic nature feels very out-of-place. i feel like if 'natural habitat seventeen' is what they're going for, we should've done another ttt! it's like going so far into the concept that they kinda lost the spirit of what gose is ... (a theme that i'll go into further episodes as well)
i will say, the set up does keep a lot of tried and true settings for going seventeen enjoyers. the karaoke machine makes for some fun moments, especially for dino's solo performance of spell (my favorite song off of 17 is right here) and vernon surprising everyone by doing the closing performance. cooking the food brought back our clueless chef hoshi and also showcased some pairings you rarely see together in gose, like jun and woozi and v8 (before the announcement of v8), seungkwan and joshua (whose badminton game did, unfortunately, get edited out), and bss x picheolin. however, again, there is nothing here that we haven't seen before, and nothing adding to the things we have seen before, aside from the narration. even the members using water guns to disturb minghao's meditation isn't really a new situation, per se -- water guns are in plenty of other episodes. what else is there to make the episode stand out?
ranking:
concept: 4; i get the vision, but there simply wasn't enough substance to make it a hit
chemistry: 7; pretty average in terms of gose episode chemistry
enjoyment: 6; i found the first episode dragging, but the second was a bit more fun.
overall - 5.6/10
