going seventeen | high society
premise:
the members act as aristocrats in a high-society party, where if they laugh, they receive an electric shock
comments:
i've stated before how i'm not the greatest fan of the ad-lib episodes as i see them as extremely hit or miss -- the hits, of course, being legendary (thank you wonwoo's diary and god of light music) while the misses are such duds that i'm deliberately putting off rewatching most of them -- with the expanding scale, they often end up quite forced and not as funny for me. plus, with the inherent lack of game or goal, i often find myself bored most often when i'm watching an ad-lib.
while this one was a bit more entertaining to me compared to an episode like the musical heirs, i didn't find it reaching the heights of god of light music. however, where i see us going back to a formula that has been proven to work is with the electric shocks. i can't recall if the shocks were present in going company, but they certainly were in the first(?) ad-lib episode, seventeen's got talent, which elevated that episode to some pretty high highs. it's one thing for seventeen to try to be funny to make going seventeen funny. it's another thing for seventeen to try to be funny because it's a competition between them and their members -- and the best sequences out of this episode are from just that (like bang!), rather than the producers trying to clipfarm (like with the storybook reading).
ranking:
concept: 6.5; idk why there was so much budget in this episode (likely to make up for the simplicity) but if we're doing more ad-libs bring back the shock machines!
chemistry: 6; i wouldn't say it's the best...
enjoyment: 7; kinda mid, but it's smack in between two phenomenal episodes so...
overall - 6.5/10
